The People’s Collection

The People’s Collection is made up of cards pulled throughout the Packs To The People video series, stuff we dig that gets saved as a memento.  Because we’re weepy, sentimental-type guys.

For The Cup! or Why Upper Deck’s NHL The Cup Was Delayed  (Parts 1 and 2)

2009 Upper Deck MLS Materials (SP), David Beckhambeckham

We filmed this video at Upper Deck headquarters, and because of the premise of the video, Upper Deck dug us up a few boxes of their MLS soccer product, in case we could somehow use it.  David Beckham was pictured on the outside of one of the boxes, and for much of the day, everyone, actors and crew, made Beckham jokes and Beckham what-ifs.  At the very end of the day, I finally opened the box, opened one pack, and can you believe it!  A David Beckham gu’d card.  I hear these are short-printed.  A truly fated pull.

Packs To The People:  2009 Upper Deck Draft Edition Basketball

jordan2009 Jordan Brand Classic GU’d redemption card #2

This video wasn’t on the list of projects lined up with Upper Deck, but Nik and I had some extra time, and we wanted to do another video while preparations were being made for the summer’s NHL The Cup video.  It just so happened that the Saturday we planned to shoot the video, L.A. Lakers Shannon Brown and Jordan Farmar were signing at the Upper Deck Store, so of course we had to make a play to figure that in.  This redemption card was pulled by Shannon Brown, though there is no mention of it in the video.  If you look closely though, after his autograph is pulled away from the other cards in the pack, you can see it.   What a pack eh?

2009 Sp Legendary Cuts Cut Auto /7, Johnny Oatescutauto

Armed with a half-case of SP Legendary Cuts, we hit the streets hard on this one.  This video was our education.  We had to figure out how to do everything right on purpose that we had done by accident in “Pack Break Missionary,” and it wasn’t easy.  This took three seperate outings of shooting, the last of which was a re-shoot of the opening and the rap.  Our favorite pack breakers throughout the experience were the awesome crew from Gainsville, FL we found on the Huntington Beach Pier, who were game for anything.  They are all pictured around me in the rap sequence.  One of those guys even chewed up an A-Rod base card on camera.  The reason this Legendary Cut makes such a good memento is simply this– Upper Deck gave us a half-case so we’d be pretty sure to hit (and film) a cut.  So poeticly enough, until we hit the cut, we had to keep shooting.

Manhunt Break

ilyagoood08-09 O-Pee-Chee Premier Quad Remnants Patch /20, Ilya Kovalchuk

A souvenir from this video is essential- this was a pretty important video for us.  After seeing “Pack Break Missionary,” Upper Deck sent us a message through YouTube offering to sponsor more videos, but there was some question as to whether we could make something equally good outside of the Packs To The People format for higher-end products.  We think this was a strong answer.  Upper Deck thought it was a little too strong.  And scary.  Hey Upper Deck, psychopaths buy cards too, you know.  Especially when the cards have absolutely sick patches like the ones on this Ilya card.  As a side note, while filming the opening scene of this video, passers-by in the park alerted the park ranger that someone may be being held against their will, bound and at knifepoint.  We found this out during the very nice chat I had with a very perplexed park ranger (after Nik ripped the duct-tape off my mouth), who clearly couldn’t decide where his responsibility to this bizarre situation began and ended.

Pack Break Missionary

08-09 Upper Deck Basketball Emulations Patch Variation, Ben Wallace and Dennis Rodmanrodmanwallace

The very first PTTP video was entitled “Pack Break Missionary,” and was originally shot as an entry into SportsCardForum’s video of the month contest, and was done with about $50 in packs.   We only bought three packs of basketball, but every one of them contained a hit, and this card is the best of them.  It’s an incredible hit for three packs, as Emulation patches fall one per case, I believe.  One question we receive quite often is, do the people breaking get to keep the hits?  In this video, no they didn’t, because we had $50 at stake.  Nowadays though, everyone keeps what they pull.
